I. STAFFING :          

The department is staffed with 35 members of which there is one PhD, 4 masters, 1 pediatrician of the second degree, 4 pediatricians of the first degree, one doctor, 2 nursing graduates, 18 nurses and 6 nurse-aids.

Dr. Nguyen Van Loc is now the Director of the department.

II. DEVELOPMENT PROCESS:

The department was established in 1969 and headed successively by the following directors :

1969 - 1972 : Dr. Ho Kim Chi

1973 - 1978 : Dr. Tran Van Manh

1979 - 1985 : Dr. Le Thi Minh Nguyet

1986 - 1995 : Dr. Ta Ngoc Nghe

Since 1996   : Dr. Nguyen Van Loc

The department won successively the appellation "The eminent work team" for ten years and in 1999 was awarded with "Merit certificate" by the Ministry of Health for its best-assignment fulfillment. 

   III. MAJOR ACTIVITIES :  

The department has 50 inpatient beds and is accountable for treatment of patients aged from 0 to 15 years with chronic and acute respiratory diseases such as : bronchopneumonia,  inflamation of the larynx and trachea, asthma, primary tuberculosis etc.

The department has been cooperating closely with the USA, Australia, Holland, WHO etc. on making surveys and doing research into the ultimate cure and therapy for various respiratory problems.

+ Research and training:

-     Study the clinical epidemiology and management of patients with respiratory diseases referred from provincial hospitals;

-     Apply advanced techniques in medicine to the making of diagnosis and management of respiratory diseases;

-     Participate in in-service training of medical staff and training post graduate students (Master and Ph.D students);

    IV. NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL COOPERRATION:

-     Exchange of experiences and knowledge with experts from Australia, Holand and the US.

-     Participate in implementation of the WHO ARI programme;
