            Total: 11 staff members

Including: 1 PhD, 1 master,  6 technicians and 1 cleaner

            Current head doctor of the department: Dr. Ngô Thị Thi, PhD

   II. History of the development :

Established in 1969

Heads doctors by periods:

From 1969 to 1979 : Dr. Nguyễn Tiến Huy

Since 1980            : Dr. Ngô Thị Thi. PhD

Main achivements

-      Awarded with the appellation “Good labor team” for many years

-      Awarded with the appellation “Excellent labor team” for 1year

-      Awarded with Congratulatory certificate by Ministry of Health in 2000

   III. Main activities :    

Activities for treatment services : The department is accountable to

·     Determinant the microbiological causes in children’s diseases to help in treatment, research and mornitoring profestional activities to lower levels.

·     Supply updated information about common microbiological causes in infectious diseases.

·     Exchange and give advice counsel on safe use of antibiotics in treatment and prevention.

·     Report promptly when the microbiological agents causing epidemic are detected.

·     Improve knowledge and apply the advanced specialized techniques in microbiological diagnosis.

Main services include the following:

·     Direct microscopy to identify parasites, pathogen fungi in intestines

·     Gram stein to formulate bacterial

·     Direct microscopy  to identify malaria, filarial

·     Culture, isolate, identify bacterial spices in blood, CSF, urine and other body fluids.

·     Serum diagnosis: ASLO, Widal, virus causing Japanese B encephalitis

·    Trials of the antibiotics resistance of bacterial (antibiogram)

·    Check the level of pollution in hospital to prevent nosocomial infection

·    Product media and solutions to isolate, identify bacterial, virus and parasites 

·     Freeze drying, keep strains for teaching and study.

Research and training

Research

-     Bacterial causes in infectious disease in children.

-     Measure the antibiotics resistance in the hospital

-     Explore the nosocomial infaection

-     Apply new techniques in bacterial diagnosis.

Training:

-     Improving knowledge for all staff in the department

-     Assist to master students and doctors specialized in microbiology.

    IV. National and international cooperation:

The department is in close cooperation with: The National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology; Clinical and Tropical disease Institute: to study on bacterial and viruses and with the Ministry of Health in Antibiotics resistance

For International cooperation, the department is in close cooperation with Japan in Bacterial causes in respiratory disease; Methods of culture, count of bacterial in naso-pharyngeal secretion of children, with Bangladesh in Epidemiology of diarrhoeal disease and with Australia in Rotavirus in intussusceptions in Children
