In the 17th Asian surgery meeting held in Taiwan, Prof. Nguyen Thanh Liem – Director of National Hospital of Pediatrics (NHP) and Vietnamese doctors performed a perfect endoscopic technique.

The performance, which was telecast live, was an endoscopic surgery to remove a cyst in the main bile duct and join hepatic with small intestine on a 2-year-old girl at Mackey Hospital, one of the biggest hospitals in Taiwan.

It is considered the most complex endoscopic technique in pediatrics, especially in this case, the cyst was big and glue to caul, duodenum and blood vessels of the liver. However, with rich experiences in 185 cases in Vietnam, Prof. Nguyen Thanh Liem and his team performed a surgery successfully. The procedure took three and a half hours and the child has recovered.

With this success, the Taiwan and also international colleagues highly appreciated and admired the endoscopic technique of Prof. Liem and Vietnamese doctors. The presentations of Prof. Nguyen Thanh Liem in the meeting and many videos on endosopic techniques with high quality in NHP made international colleagues and top-ranking surgery experts astonished.

Many doctors said they can not image that a developing country like Vietnam has a developed pediatrics endoscopic speciality as high as the leading centres in the world.

Taiwan doctors said that the Vietnamese performance and presentations changed their thinking and promoted them quickly apply complex endoscopic techniques in the coming time. Some international doctors were interested in coming to NHP to learn about it.

This great success marked an important advance on the integration of Vietnamese medicine into the world. It is also a result of tireless efford process with a venturesome spirit of Vietnamese doctors.

This success also proved that despite the hard economic conditions, deficient equiments, if we have an appropriate heading and high determination, Vietnamese doctors will make contributions with international stature.
